Financial Aid at Online Universities: Grants, Loans and Scholarships
Paying for college can be one of the most difficult parts of the whole college experience. With tuition prices constantly on the rise, it’s difficult to find ways to pay for your education. This is where financial aid can really come in and help you. There are three main types of financial aid: grants, scholarships, and loans.
Grants are normally awarded by the government on either a state or federal level. They do not have to be repaid and the maximum award for the 2010-2011 school year is $5,500. The main qualification for receiving grants is financial need. Students wanting to receive federal grants need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Scholarships are more often than not merit-based. These can be awarded by private businesses, religious organizations, charities, corporations, universities, university departments, etc. Basically anyone can award a scholarship, so do your research and find scholarships wherever you can. You would not believe some of the things you can receive a scholarship for; even doing nothing else than being tall. Scholarships are great because, like grants, you don’t have to pay back the money you receive.
Loans tend to be the most often used form of financial aid. Be careful though, loans have to be repaid in full, with interest. Many students have gotten in to financial trouble by taking out too many loans and not being smart with their finances. Do your research and find loans with the lowest interest rate and payment options that fit your budget.
Financial aid is a great way to help pay for your education and universities are always willing to help you in your search for the best forms of financial aid.
